How Dentists Repair The Chipped Tooth Problem

Our teeth are as important as any other part of our body. You need to be vigilant while taking care of your teeth and overall oral hygiene. The slightest negligence when it comes to your oral health can lead to many serious problems. Thus it is always recommended that you should visit your dentist every 6 months.

The dentists will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth and let you know the exact condition of your teeth. One of the most common problems that people experience is that of a chipped tooth — it can be caused due to several reasons.

The tooth gets chipped if you have had an accident or due to some diseases. Irrespective of the reasons or causes behind the chipping of the tooth, it can be treated easily. All you have to do is to consult a highly qualified dentist, who can identify your problem and suggest the right treatment for you.

Generally, the treatment for the chipped tooth is entirely dependent on the severity of the damage done to your teeth. Sometimes, the tooth only loses the enamel part, which can be easily treated just with one visit to the dental clinic. But if the damage is severe, then it is necessary to consult a dentist and start the intensive treatment as soon as possible. So how does the dentist repair the chipped teeth/tooth and help you get back the original smile?

Here are some of the most common ways in which dentists repair a chipped tooth — let’s understand each of them.

#1 The Dentists Can Carry Out The Procedure Of Dental Bonding And Filling

When the tooth chipping is not very severe (only the tooth enamel seems to have a problem) then your dentists would suggest you opt for dental bonding and filing procedure.

The dental bonding and dental filling procedures are different. The dentists would opt for dental bonding when the chipping occurs in the front teeth. Similarly, if the dental bonding occurs in the back teeth, then the dentists would opt for a dental filling treatment procedure.

In the dental bonding procedure, the dentists would use tooth-colored composite resins to repair the chipped portion. Besides this, the dental bonding process does not require numbing the teeth, instead, they make use of a liquid that will increase the bonding between the material and the tooth.

#2 Dentist Employ Dental Cap Or Crown For Repairing Chipped Tooth/Teeth

When the teeth chipping is severe (the teeth are broken or cracked), then it is not possible to carry out the dental bonding or filling process. This is because when a large piece of the tooth gets broken, then it can’t be treated with dental bonding or filling process.

So, the dentists opt for placing a dental cap or crown. In this process, the dentist will completely grind and remove the remaining part of the chipped teeth. Once the grinding process is complete, the dentists would cover up the tooth or teeth with a dental tooth cap or also called the dental crown.

The dental cap or crown will help in repairing the chipped teeth and also improves the appearance of the teeth. Dental crowns are available in two different formats — permanent and replaceable. The permanent crowns are available in metal, porcelain, metallic and ceramic material.

#3 The Dentists Would Use The Dental Veneers To Repair The Damaged or Chipped Teeth

If the front teeth are chipped or damaged severely, then the dentists would employ yet another treatment method to make your teeth look healthy and whole again. The dental veneers are basically an extremely thin layer or shell that is developed matching the tooth color in porcelain material.

Another material that can be used for dental veneer is resin, but it is slightly thicker than the porcelain dental veneer. The dental veneers are prepared in the laboratory by taking an impression of the original teeth, and the entire process would take at least one or two weeks.

#4 Repairing Chipped Teeth With Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is applicable when the teeth are chipped or damaged severely, and the gum of the teeth is exposed. This gum pulp comprises the nerves and blood vessels and exposure can lead to serious problems.

If not treated immediately, the surrounding area of the tooth can become infected and other serious issues. Root canal therapy is a bit more painful than the other treatment processes and not opted for by many people.

Summary

Keeping your dental health well-maintained is quite essential for everyone, irrespective of age. If you are inculcating healthy oral habits, you can ensure that your teeth remain strong and sturdy for a long time. At any point in time, if you experience chipped teeth, then it is always better to consult dentists on an immediate basis.
