Wisdom Teeth Removal: What You Need To Know About It!

Millions of people suffer from a common dental issue — impacted teeth or wisdom teeth. According to a survey, it was found that almost 60 to 65% of people in the US are undergoing dental treatment to get their wisdom teeth extracted. The surgery that is carried out for wisdom tooth extraction is pretty common, but still, you may have some doubts and questions in your mind about the process of wisdom teeth removal. In this article, we would be covering everything that is related to wisdom teeth extraction.

What Do You Mean By Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are part of the molars that belong to the third set of the teeth. These molars help grind the food you eat into smaller pieces. Moreover, these molars are also the only set of teeth that develop last and are part of the permanent teeth. According to the experts, some people have more than 3 to 4 wisdom teeth, some have the usual 4 wisdom teeth, and some do not have any wisdom teeth at all.

How The Wisdom Teeth Can Be Recognized?

The presence of wisdom teeth can be observed only with the help of x-rays and teeth scanners. The teeth are visible even when they are below the gums and still not erupted completely. But this can be done only by dentists. The wisdom teeth would be visible to you when they try to erupt out of the gums (around the age of 17 to 25). The wisdom teeth are the extra teeth that do not have any place in the entire set. This is because the bone and the existing teeth do not allow them to do so. But they still try to erupt and make a place for themselves. When the position is not available, they start crowding around the adjacent teeth. Sometimes, when the wisdom teeth are unable to erupt, they will get trapped inside the gum and create extra pain and discomfort.

Why Do You Think It Is Necessary To Get The Wisdom Teeth Removed?

It is important to understand that not everyone having wisdom teeth needs to get them removed. If the wisdom teeth are not creating any problems to the other teeth or gum or causing any sort of pain, then there is no need to get them removed. In a recent study, it was reported that almost 40 to 45% of people need to get their wisdom teeth removed, but only due to specific reasons. The common reasons that lead to wisdom tooth extraction are:

1. The wisdom teeth are crowding other teeth and disrupting the original position, and making them crooked.

2. When the wisdom teeth start growing sideways and shift the adjacent teeth.

3. When there is extreme pain due to half eruption of the wisdom teeth.

4. When the wisdom teeth cause pain in the jawbone.

5. If the wisdom teeth are causing the adjacent tooth decay or gum infection.

In the above-mentioned scenarios, if you are not getting the wisdom teeth removed, it may form a small cyst or a tumor, which will cause severe damage to the jawbone and all the other teeth.

What Would Happen If The Wisdom Teeth Are Not Removed?

Whether you want the wisdom teeth removed or not is an important decision, and you need to follow the suggestion of your dentists as they would want your oral health to be perfect. At times it is important to get your wisdom teeth removed because of the position of the teeth; it becomes difficult to clean the area. Even though you are brushing regularly and flossing, reaching the corner of the mouth might be difficult. This may eventually lead to cavities and tooth decay.

What Analysis Will Let The Dentists Know That It Is Better To Get The Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Dentists perform some physical tests and x-rays to analyze the positioning of the wisdom teeth. If the wisdom teeth are creating problems to the gums and adjacent teeth, then it is better to get them removed before any serious dental issues crop up.

Summary

Wisdom teeth do not serve any purpose in maintaining your oral hygiene. Instead, it may be a problem for the surrounding teeth and gums. So it is always recommended to consult dentists when you feel pain and discomfort due to the wisdom teeth.
